General Discussion AionSource Why Block IPs Outside the U.S? permalink top

I'm from the EU and have always played on U.S servers in the MMO's i've been involved in. I've been playing the Chinese beta/retail for a few months and have tried to play in the event last weekend so i got a beta event key but it would not allow me to play in the U.S region. I always thought if i had a U.S key it would allow me to play there, but they've actually blocked the IPs. Why are MMO's nowdays deciding for everyone where they can play? It didn't used to be like this.

There are some key activation restrictions in place (as some of you have noticed), but I'm still looking into confirming to what extent. Rest assured that as a European you should be able to activate a European service, and likewise for North Americans. If this is not the case right now, it will hopefully soon be sorted.

I just hope that we get a full official confirmation on this quickly.
Yep, hoping to be able to give you this ASAP. Still looking into it.

I know this is a huge topic of discussion among many fansite and legion forums. The community team hears you loud and clear. We are not ignoring this thread; we're in the process of getting a solid answer. We've been running a lot of tests on our servers and are actively investigating several areas, one of them being cross-territory play. We have not announced anything officially on this topic, please bear with us - as soon as we know for sure, the players will be the first to know.

There is only so much mucking about we will take..

All we ask for is clear defined information, I fail to see how it is hard to publish that.
It's coming. I think we've made it clear that we're getting this your way as soon as we're able to. We have no reason not to, we just want to make sure that we give you the correct information regarding how it's working and how it will continue to work.

I'm hoping we'll have some more expressive messaging regarding this whole debacle (in lack of better words!) very soon. I do know that there's a turn-around for adding more countries to our filter exceptions and that we are still sorting out what the finalized set of rules will look like. I've been posting in this thread daily since the beginning, and will continue to do so until I'm able to return with an ultimate answer.

Just to update you today, quoting Liv's post in one of the new's threads, where she refers to a more expressive statement on the matter:

This is still a high priority issue for me, and I have today again inquired for a status update on the matter. Since I've been away for a week (Comic-Con) I'm hoping that some progress has been made. I'll let you know as soon as I get something.

I have an update on this, folks, and I'm sure some of you may already have noticed the changes and fixes we have made to our filters. We do no longer have any IP blocks at all between the NA and EU territories, meaning that you can create an NA account from Europe if you have a valid key, and vice versa. If you still experience problems applying your European key to an NA account (or v.v.), contact Customer Support to sort it out.

Thanks for you patience on the matter guys, I know it's taken a long time to get this information confirmed!

As for Eastern Europe, I am still waiting for confirmation on what exactly will happen short- and mid-term.

I currently live in the US and have been planning to play with my friends on the NA servers, however sometime within the next few months I will be relocated to Japan for my job. Do these regional blocks mean that once I'm relocated I will no longer be able to play on the NA servers? You only mentioned removing blocks between the NA and EU territories, which leaves me worried that this may indeed be the case.

I would appreciate some sort of answer because this sounds like it could put a kink in my plans to play this game.
There shouldn't be any limitations when you actually play the game, as long as you make sure to have your account set up before you leave. NC Japan takes care of the Japanese market and would be the ones to turn to if you want to create a new account over there.

Do note that this is subject to change, though, and only reflects the current status.

I don't know if there will ever be changes to this, and I don't want you to dig up my quote if that would happen, and unleash a volley of dislike.

I pre-ordered a European version of Aion, and I do live in Europe. Am I still limited to only the European servers? From what was said, it sounds like I would still have to get an NA version of Aion to play on the NA servers. Should I just tell my family in Canada to get the Euro version, or will we have access to all servers now? Just wondering because my sister is waiting on my word about what/when she should pre-order, so I just want to clarify.
You need a North American version of the game to play on North American servers.

Am I screwed?
You're most likely a part of the area we service (most countries in the Americas), so you should be able to play on North American servers without problems.

Hehe, I didn't refer to only the beta in any of my posts. I stated what applies now and onwards, but warned that things can always change.

As some of you are still confused regarding this matter, let me re-iterate:

There has previously been an IP block preventing European users from activating a North American account in their master account control panel, and vice versa. This is now removed - we do no longer have any IP blocks between EU and NA, and users are free to active accounts regardless of them living in either of these two territories. They will however need to purchase a game version that is for the region they want to play in. We do not sell version of the other regions via our official NCsoft store - it will default and show only the version appropriate for the region you are located in.

Hope that clears it up.
